Our Vision

We empower teachers and administrators throughout Brooklyn North schools to promote multilingualism, ensure equal educational access for MLLs/ELLs and their families, ensure that students become proficient in 21st century literacies and are confident in their abilities to problem solve in an ever changing society.

Our Mission

Our mission is to serve the students, teachers, families, and school leaders across Brooklyn North schools in collaboration with other stakeholders and departments in the BCO. We seek to build the capacity of our teachers and administrators to support the achievement of multilingualism through high quality professional learning that is based on research based ELL strategies and the Instructional Leadership Framework as well as support the design of coherent and equitable systems and structures that address the linguistic, cultural, and academic needs of MLL/ELLS programs.

Professional Learning Series (PLS)

Professional Learning Series are a series of professional learning sessions (usually 4-6) designed around a topic of study. This support structure is comprised of stakeholders from many schools brought to a centralized location for half day or full day sessions. One-on-one embedded coaching opportunities for stakeholders are offered as part of the session. The lens for these coaching sessions is the previous sessions' topic of study.

Professional Learning Communicty (plc)

Professional Learning Communities are a series of professional learning sessions (usually 4-6) designed around a topic of study. This support for a forty-five minute to an hour and a half session (based on school schedule). One-on-one embedded coaching opportunities for stakeholders are offered as part of the session. The lens for these coaching sessions is the previous sessions' topic of study.

The ELL Team's Favorite Web-Based applications

EdPuzzle is a free assessment-centered tool that allows teachers and students to create interactive online videos by including open-ended or multiple-choice questions, audio notes, audio tracks, or comments on a video.

Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create facilitate video discussions. Teachers can pose questions and their students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.

Google Jamboard is a whiteboard-like 4K touch display you can use for meetings and presentation purposes. Turn it on, draw on it, and flip through slides on it. Google has added G Suite support to Jamboard, so users will be able to directly access and edit Docs, Sheets, Slides, and photos stored in Drive.

Kahoot! is a tool administer quizzes, facilitate discussions or surveys. It is a game based classroom response system played by the whole class in real time or independently.

Newsela is an instructional tool that allows teachers to find articles with appropriate reading levels for their students. Newsela articles also feature questions and writing prompts that align with common core standards.

Padlet is an online virtual “bulletin” board, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, share links and pictures, in a secure location. Padlet allows users to create a hidden wall with a custom URL.

Pear Deck Slides is a tool that allows the user to create Interactive presentations. Students can respond to prompts and questions and send them to your device for instant data collection.

Screencastify is a screen recorder that will record, edit and share HD videos in seconds.

StoryWorld is an interactive web-app that offers 80+ Bilingual (Spanish, English, Mandarin) ebooks, quizgames, and worksheets. Teachers are able to track the progress of each student through the dashboard.

A platform that allows teachers to prepare interactive lessons by including engaging media and formative assessment.

Guiding Principles designed by NYSED’s Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages in order to clarify expectations for administrators, policymakers, and practitioners to prepare ELLs/MLLs for success.

These briefs are designed to aid New York State educators in implementing the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards.

A set of Topic Briefs on ELL/MLL best practices prepared by Aida Walqui and others at WestEd. Dr. Walqui has had a long and successful career in the development of teacher expertise to work with Multilingual Learners in deep, rigorous, and accelerated ways in both their family and second languages.

Colorín Colorado is the premier national website serving educators and families of English language learners (ELLs) in Grades PreK-12. Colorín Colorado has been providing free research-based information, activities, and advice to parents, schools, and communities around the country for more than a decade.
